North Carolina Plumbing Exam Information

North Carolina has adopted the International Plumbing Code (IPC), the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), the International Administrative Code (IAC) and the International Residential Code (IRC). When studying for your plumbing exam, you’ll need to be sure to get the correct version of the International codes as NC has added its own amendments. Be sure you have the 2018 NC Plumbing Code, the 2018 NC Fuel Gas Code, the 2018 NC Administrative Code, and the 2018 NC Residential Code. These are based on the 2015 International Codes.

North Carolina offers plumbing licenses under three(3) classifications:

  • NC Plumbing Contractor – Class 1 (Residential and Commercial Plumbing)
  • NC Plumbing Contractor – Class 2 (Residential Plumbing Only)
  • NC Plumbing Technician (sub-licensee of a licensed plumbing contractor)
North Carolina does not have reciprocity for these licenses with any other state. Anyone seeking a NC plumbing license must pass a NC exam even if they are licensed by another state.

Here a some additional FAQs about the above licenses:

  • There are no financial requirements for any of the above licenses at this time.
  • Pre-approval from the State Board is required to sit for any of these examinations.
  • Exam applications can be downloaded free of charge.
  • There is a examination fee of $100 that must be sent along with the application.
  • You have 30 days to take your exam after approval.
  • If you do not take your exam within 30 days of approval, you must re-apply by application again (another $100).
  • Once you are approved to sit for an exam, you will receive a password for PSI Testing Centers and you can schedule your exam.
  • Exams are computerized and can be schedule at the your convenience (usually Monday – Saturday).
  • Examinations are OPEN BOOK.
  • All reference books will be supplied to you at the testing center. You CANNOT carry your own books into the testing center, although you will need your own set in order to study for your exam.
